MFM Can Survive, But Only By A Miracle…

One of the favourite songs of Nigerian football fans goes thus: “He’s a miracle working God (2ce)/He’s the Alpha, and Omega/He’s a miracle working God”. That is the song MFM FC fans will likely be singing when they face FC Ifeanyi Uba in game they must win, to secure their Premiership status as the NPFL season ends on Sunday. But Heartland are also in need of a miracle…

Giwa FC, Ikorodu United and Warri Wolves are already relegated. Warri Wolves are talking tough, but they have only 42 points and a minus 10 goal difference. They will need to win by at least five goals against ikorodu United, and hope Heartland lose in Jos against Plateau United, to stay in the top division. The danger is that Plateau United, who have a chance to climb into the Top 10 and make more money, may not be motivated enough to kill off Heartland, who need just a point from that fixture to stay safe.

That leaves MFM and Heartland trying to wriggle out of that last relegation spot. That single point I predicted is crucial because it will take Heartland to 44 points. MFM are on 42 points and will need an outright win over FC Ifeanyi Uba to reach 45 points and be safe. They are not likely to get that win.

MFM have won only one of their last 10 matches, and just one of their last four at home. FC Ifeanyi Uba on the other hand, have not lost an away game to any team in the bottom half of the table since they lost 2-1 in Minna to Niger Tornadoes in June. Since then, Ifeanyi Uba have nicked away points from MFM neighbors: Shooting Stars, Heartland, Warri Wolves, Ikorodu united and Abia Warriors. And the pressure that MFM will face, will make it doubly difficult.

Therefore, with Giwa FC, Ikorodu United and Warri Wolves already confirmed, expect Heartland to get the point they need in Jos, while FC Ifeanyi Uba, in search of CAF Champions League football, will make life difficult for nervous MFM, who will be relegated.
