Enugu Rangers will be crowned Champions of the NPFL on Sunday, and have qualified for the CAF Champions League. But the second slot is still open. Rivers United currently sit in second place on the log, and FC Ifeanyi Uba are third, but of the lot, Wikki Tourists in fourth place, look likely to occupy that second spot…
Rivers United’s 57 points gave them the right to sit just behind Rangers on the log. But to keep that Champions League slot, the Port Harcourt side will need at least a point from their trip to Uyo, where they face Akwa United. That solitary point will give them an unassailable 58 points. But, Rivers United have not scored an away goal in their last 10 travels, and have failed to keep a Clean Sheet in all but two games away from home this season.
They tried hard against Wikki Tourist on Match Day 36, but at the very end, their defence caved-in. Akwa United have failed to score at home only twice this season, but have found the net against every visitor that had come calling since April. 10 straight games. 22 goals. Akwa United to win.
Ifeanyi Uba, with 56 points and in third place, will jump into that second spot should they secure a win away in Lagos against MFM. The Nnewi side had thrown everything at winning the Championship, but will accept a CAF Champions League place. However, FC Ifeanyi Uba have won only once, while securing five draws on the road this season. Plus, the 29 goals they’ve conceded away from home in 18 matches, means they will likely concede a goal against an MFM attack that has produced 23 goals in 18 home contests. However, MFM have played three draws in the last 10 home games, Ifeanyi Uba have played four draws in last nine away games. This game will end in a score draw.
Wikki Tourists are mean at home. 17 matches played at Bauchi so far, four drawn, 13 won, 34 goals scored. That’s an average of two goals every game. They face Sunshine Stars. A team that folded under pressure in Ibadan and at Enugu. Sunshine Stars are safe, and will offer little resistance. A clear win for Wikki.
A win for Wikki, loss for Rivers United and draw for FC Ifeanyi Uba will see all three finish with 57 pts, but with better goals difference, Wikki get the CAF CL spot.
